Ergonomics
If you seem to suffer from many tension headaches or migraine headaches while at work, chances are your culprit could be improper ergonomics. For those of not familiar with what ergonomics is, let me tell you what it is. Ergonomics is the study of how your body interacts with your surroundings when you are performing a task or activity.
Ergonomics often involves organizing your surroundings to include your tools, equipment, lighting and how you do things to suit you and the activity you are doing. If you work in an office, you will want to pay special attention to office ergonomics as it focuses on setting up your work area to fit your personal needs while you are doing your job.
If you have your workstation set up correctly, you will be less likely to have such problems such as eyestrain or headaches. You can even reduce such problems as neck and back pain. Proper ergonomics can also prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, which can be related to jobs that involve repetitive activities. If your work station is properly set up to meet your needs, you will notice that your productivity will increase as well as your quality of work life.
If you sit at a desk all day long, there are a few things that you will want to do that are ergonomic wise to prevent tension headaches. Perhaps, one of the most important things to do is blink! That’s right, blink. Studies show that the eyes of computer users’ often become irritated. They believe this to be a result of the fact that most people tend to blink less often when working on a computer. The display of your computer is very similar to a tv screen and at least sixty times per second, the whole display is refreshed. The computer does this by lighting each tiny spot on the screen with color, starting on the top and working its way down going from left to right.
Your eyes cannot detect this rapid activity, so you see just a normal screen. However, there are some people that can subconsciously or consciously see some of the flicker when it refreshes at a rate of sixty times per second (60 Hz or 60 Hertz). If you find that you are getting headaches while working on your computer, you may want to adjust the refresh rate to seventy five Hertz or even higher. Just be sure to follow the manufactures instructions when making these changes.
So, you can see how much proper ergonomics can help you immensely at work. There are great benefits to making sure your work environment is properly arranged to make you as comfortable as possible. Not only will you feel better, but your production level at work will increase, giving you an overall better sense of well being. Just making sure your computer components are at the proper levels will help to avoid back and neck strain and this will make a huge difference in the number of migraine headaches and tension headaches that you get.
