Often, when we experience headaches eye strain is the last thing we think of. We consider stress, noise, work, smells, or other such things, but we never really think of eye strain. However, rather you realize it or not, eye strain can be a major cause of migraine headaches or tension headaches.

When and how does eye strain occur? Well, any time your eyes are under stress for any reason, strain can result. Here are a few causes of eye strain:

• Prolonged focus on one task – Keeping your eyes focused on one task for a long period of time can really have an affect on the eyes

• Staring at a fixed object – Particularly on close objects. The eyes are not designed to keep its focus on one close object for a long time. The eyes are more meant to shift between distant and near.

• Glare – Sunlight or artificial light that is shining right into your eyes, either reflected or direct have an impact on the eyes.

• Poor Lighting – It is necessary to have adequate lighting during tasks. Too little light can cause the eyes to strain in order to focus.

• Contrast – Dark screen with a bright backing, or light text with dark backing

• Need for Glasses – Near sightedness or far sightedness, without corrective lenses will definitely lead to eye strain.

Any one of the above can lead to migraine headaches or tension headaches just due to eye strain. The best thing to do is take corrective measures right away. For example, if you continually work on a computer, make sure that your computer screen or work area is kept at a safe distance from your eyes.

Give your eyes a break a minimum of once per hour, make sure you blink frequently to relieve them of strain. Make sure the lighting within your office or home is adequate, you want to eliminate a strain to focus.

Also, see an optometrist if you think you may need corrective lenses, this can be a very important factor in relieving eye strain headaches such as tension headaches and migraine headaches.
