The mind can do amazing feats to produce relaxation and even pain control. Some people are more inclined to one form over another, for example, someone with a "hyper active" mind like mine will find methods like self hypnosis and guided imagery as better place to start than, straight meditation, which requires more discipline and practice to master to get the results we want.
